November
Moody, Minimalist & Stormy
The autumn leaves have mostly fallen, leaving stark, skeletal, and dramatic tree silhouettes. The North Sea becomes violent and aggressive. Heavy fogs, flat overcast lighting, and huge, crashing waves make this the absolute perfect month for dark, moody, minimalist, fine-art black and white seascape photography at exposed locations like Seaton Sluice or Cullernose Point.
Seal Pupping Season
The Farne Islands undergo a massive transformation, becoming one of the largest grey seal colonies in the UK. Thousands of fluffy, pure-white seal pups are born on the rocky islands, with the peak of the pupping occurring between November 15th and 25th. Boat tours allow you to view them safely. It is absolutely critical to keep your distance to avoid distressing the protective mothers.
Leonids & Early Darkness
The Leonid Meteor shower peaks mid-month on November 18th-18th, known for producing incredibly bright, fast meteors. The 'Beaver Moon' rises on Nov 24th. The massive advantage of November is that true, inky-black astronomical darkness returns by 17:30. You can head into the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, shoot deep space objects for four hours, and still be home in time for dinner.
Moon Phase Calendar
Every night's moon shape for November 2026 at a glance - the darkest, moonless nights (around the New Moon) are consistently your best chance at the Milky Way or a fainter Aurora; a bright Full Moon washes both out.
Month Specifics
The Farne Islands (for the seal pups) or Dunstanburgh Castle. The skeletal ruins of the castle perfectly match the bleak, dramatic atmosphere of the November coast.
Often stormy, wet, and highly unpredictable. Protect your camera gear from the corrosive sea spray. The wind chill on the coast can be brutal.
A rain cover for your camera and lens. Microfibre cloths to constantly wipe the sea salt and rain spray off your front element between exposures.
