Eye to Eye, Short-Eared Owl
From £32.00
A short-eared owl banks straight toward the lens, wings fully spread and that golden stare locked on. A different moment from the same hunting flight as the other short-eared owl shot, this one full-frontal rather than banking away.

Unusually for an owl, the short-eared owl hunts by day as well as night, quartering open moorland and rough grassland on long, buoyant wings in search of voles. It nests directly on the ground among heather or tussocky grass rather than in a tree hole, and UK numbers rise and fall sharply from year to year with the vole population it depends on.
