Native to East Asia, the mandarin duck escaped and was deliberately released from ornamental wildfowl collections in Britain through the 20th century and has since established a wild, self-sustaining population, mostly across southern and central England with scattered pairs further north. Unusually among ducks, it nests in tree holes, sometimes well above the ground.
