Red Grouse, Northumberland Moor - a photography print from NorthernPixl

Red Grouse, Northumberland Moor

From £32.00

A male red grouse surfaces from the heather at first light, his red eye-comb flared and catching the low sun, larger and brighter in males, especially through the breeding season. Almost entirely endemic to Britain and Ireland's uplands, this bird is as much a symbol of the northern moors as the heather it hides in.

About the Red Grouse

The red grouse is found almost nowhere else in the world outside Britain and Ireland's upland moors, where it depends almost entirely on heather for food and cover. Males carry a bright red comb above the eye, brighter still through the spring breeding season, while the duller, better-camouflaged females do almost all of the incubating and chick-rearing alone.
