The long-eared owl is one of Britain's most secretive owls, rarely seen in daylight and easily overlooked thanks to tree-bark-mottled plumage and tufts that break up its outline against a branch. Its real ear openings are hidden under feathers; the prominent "ears" are just display tufts. Nationally scarce, with only a few thousand pairs thought to breed in the UK, it favours conifer plantations and scrubby woodland edge.
