Short-Eared Owl on the Hunt
From £32.00
A short-eared owl banks low over coastal grassland, hunting in daylight rather than at dusk like most owls. That golden stare and the sun catching its underwing make this one of the more dramatic hunters on the Northumberland coast.

Unusually for an owl, the short-eared owl hunts by day as well as night, quartering open moorland and rough grassland on long, buoyant wings in search of voles. It nests directly on the ground among heather or tussocky grass rather than in a tree hole, and UK numbers rise and fall sharply from year to year with the vole population it depends on.
