Once common across Britain, the red squirrel has been pushed out of most of England by the larger, introduced grey squirrel and the squirrelpox virus it carries. Northumberland remains one of its last English strongholds, with conservation groups actively managing woodland and grey squirrel numbers to give the native red a fighting chance.
