A blue tit balances on a lichen-covered branch, a plump green caterpillar held firmly in its beak, a meal bound for hungry chicks nearby.

A blue tit pair can bring well over 1,000 caterpillars back to a single brood of chicks before they fledge, timing egg-laying each spring to match the exact peak of caterpillar numbers on nearby trees as closely as possible. It's one of Britain's most familiar garden birds, but that relentless caterpillar-hunting mostly happens out in woodland and hedgerow.
