The little egret was a rare visitor to Britain until the 1990s, after which it colonised southern and eastern coasts rapidly and has since spread north and inland; it's now a familiar sight on estuaries and wetlands across much of the country. Delicate plumes on the back of its head, called aigrettes, were once so prized by the Victorian fashion trade that they drove the species to the edge of extinction in parts of Europe.
