Short-Eared Owl, Close Watch
From £32.00
A tighter crop on the same fence-post owl, close enough to pick out every fleck in that facial disc. The disc itself works like a satellite dish, funnelling sound to help the owl pinpoint prey it can't yet see.

Unusually for an owl, the short-eared owl hunts by day as well as night, quartering open moorland and rough grassland on long, buoyant wings in search of voles. It nests directly on the ground among heather or tussocky grass rather than in a tree hole, and UK numbers rise and fall sharply from year to year with the vole population it depends on.
