Hadrian's Wall was built from 122 AD on the orders of Emperor Hadrian to mark the northern frontier of Roman Britain, running coast to coast for 73 miles. Milecastles, small fortlets housing a garrison, were spaced roughly a Roman mile apart along its entire length, and the foundations of many are still visible today.
