Nearly wiped out in parts of Britain by pesticide pollution through the mid-20th century, the European otter has made a strong recovery since those chemicals were banned and is now found on rivers and coastlines across almost the whole of the UK. A thick, insulating double coat lets it hunt in cold water year-round, grooming constantly to keep it waterproof.
