Short-Eared Owl on the Fence Line
From £32.00
A short-eared owl perches on a fence post at golden hour, its heart-shaped face turned straight to the camera and those amber eyes wide open. Fence posts and dune edges are favourite watch-points for hunting at dusk.

Unusually for an owl, the short-eared owl hunts by day as well as night, quartering open moorland and rough grassland on long, buoyant wings in search of voles. It nests directly on the ground among heather or tussocky grass rather than in a tree hole, and UK numbers rise and fall sharply from year to year with the vole population it depends on.
