The green sandpiper is a wader with an unusually un-wader-like habit of favouring small freshwater pools, ditches and riverbanks rather than open mud or shore. Most seen in Britain are passing through on migration between breeding grounds in Scandinavia and wintering areas further south, with only a handful ever staying to breed here.
