Short-Eared Owl on the Turn
From £32.00
Mid-flight and banking hard, this short-eared owl locks eyes with the lens as it turns. Unusually for an owl, this species hunts by day as often as by night, which is what makes shots like this possible at all.

Unusually for an owl, the short-eared owl hunts by day as well as night, quartering open moorland and rough grassland on long, buoyant wings in search of voles. It nests directly on the ground among heather or tussocky grass rather than in a tree hole, and UK numbers rise and fall sharply from year to year with the vole population it depends on.
