The tawny owl is Britain's most common owl, and the one behind almost every "twit-twoo" heard after dark - in reality a male's hoot answered by a female's sharper "kee-wick". Owlets leave the nest hole before they can fly, scrambling out onto nearby branches with beak and claws, a stage known as branching.
