Puffin with a Catch

A puffin returns to the colony with a beakful of sand eels, the catch that keeps a single chick fed through the summer. A puffin can carry off a dozen or more fish at once, wedged crosswise in that colourful bill.

Atlantic puffins spend most of the year far out at sea, only coming ashore to breed in dense cliff-top and island colonies each spring and early summer. The Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast hold one of the UK's largest colonies, with tens of thousands of pairs nesting in rabbit burrows and rock crevices; an adult can carry a dozen or more sand eels at once, wedged crosswise in that famously colourful bill.
