Short-Eared Owl on Watch
From £32.00
A short-eared owl stands bolt upright on a moss-covered post, staring straight down the lens. A stiller, more formal portrait than the other short-eared owl shots, no wind, no motion, just that stare.

Unusually for an owl, the short-eared owl hunts by day as well as night, quartering open moorland and rough grassland on long, buoyant wings in search of voles. It nests directly on the ground among heather or tussocky grass rather than in a tree hole, and UK numbers rise and fall sharply from year to year with the vole population it depends on.
