Hen Grouse in the Heather
From £32.00
A female red grouse watches from cover, her comb far more understated than a male's and her plumage giving better camouflage against the moor. Females do most of the incubation and rearing alone, so that instinct to stay hidden runs deep.

The red grouse is found almost nowhere else in the world outside Britain and Ireland's upland moors, where it depends almost entirely on heather for food and cover. Males carry a bright red comb above the eye, brighter still through the spring breeding season, while the duller, better-camouflaged females do almost all of the incubating and chick-rearing alone.
