About STEVE

STEVE - Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement - is a rare atmospheric light phenomenon that looks like an aurora but isn't one: it's caused by a fast-moving ribbon of superheated gas in the upper atmosphere, a different process entirely from the charged-particle collisions that produce the aurora itself. First named and studied with the help of citizen aurora-spotters in the 2010s, it often appears alongside genuine aurora activity, as it does here.
